Immigration, a message to my elected officials

I am strongly opposed to the currently proposed, so-called ‘Comprehensive Immigration’ bill.  Why can a person who has illegally entered this country receive a blanket amnesty allowing for citizenship, when legal immigrants need to wait over 7 tax-paying years to obtain citizenship?  Why should an entire category of law-breaking individuals get a blank check out of paying the taxes that each and every one of us legal citizens and residents pay?  This is not just about fair apportionment of costs, but also the concept of equality under the law.

I am not for the current immigration policies, as a matter of fact, I am currently opposed to them, as well as to the majority of the currently over-sized, bloated federal bureaucracy.  I don’t recall ever asking the government to be my baby-sitter, limiting the activities I can participate in that harm no one but, conceivably, myself.  However, be that as it may, the laws as written are there, exist, and should be enforced AS IS.  If we can not enforce and uphold the current laws, what is to ensure that new laws will even be followed?  If the government can not even follow it’s own laws and regulations, nor enforce it’s own proclamations, and if the government does not even acknowledge it’s inadequacy, what are we, the citizens, to think?

Response #2 - Representative Don Manzullo

The following is the response to my questions that I sent in to my congressional representatives. I’ll comment here that although the response was concerning the current Iraq situation, it failed to address one important aspect. How efficiently are we killing our enemies? I don’t agree with the war in Iraq, as a matter of fact I think it is one of the worst ideas our government has ever had. But my concern is this: How inefficient has our military gotten? Are we using our military to it’s best effect, or is the whole concept of “bigger, badder, and more expensive” robbed us of our ability to wage effective war? That is my concern in this. The only effective way I can think of to fight a guerrilla war, is to make it more expensive for the guerrillas to fight than for us to defend. Please see the response after the jump: Read More

A Letter to our Government 05-04-2007

I encountered a concept while reading a novel recently that I thought was worthy of further thought. The book was titled: World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks (son of legendary Mel Brooks). You can find it on Amazon™ here - link. I found the book to be a rather interesting tale, composed of fictional interviews with survivors of a Zombie outbreak a la George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead series. The concept was of a Resource to Kill ratio. IE how much does it cost us in lives, resources, and cash, for each enemy kill? Thinking of the sinkhole that is Iraq, and our continual pouring of funds down that drain, I figured a question needed to be asked of our government. And so, I have sent the following letter to my government representatives:

This is a very trying and troubling time for our county, and there are several questions that I think need to be answered by our leadership. Questions for both our military leadership, and our sitting President. The United States is a powerful and prosperous country, but it seems we are pouring more and more funds, resources, and lives into the sinkhole that is Iraq. I regret being so callous and crass as to ask this, but are we getting the maximum effective use out of every dollar that we spend in Iraq? Are we actually accomplishing something for every American life spent?

There is a concept that can best be likened to Resources to Kill Ratio. How much are we spending, not just in US Dollars, for every confirmed enemy combatant killed? How does this compare to previous military campaigns? Is the US military more efficient or less efficient now in Iraq, than what it was in say World War II? Korea? Vietnam? We voting citizens, regardless of party affiliation, need to know if the custodians of our taxes are spending our lives and money in the most effective manner.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
